Basic Hydrologic Concepts

Module Goal

To provide the forecaster with an overview of the hydrologic process from the hydrologic cycle, through basin characteristics and steam types, mean areal precipitation, rainfall-runoff relationships, unit hydrographs, and rating tables, to the stage forecasts.

Module Objectives

·        Define hydrologic terms and units

·        Identify the important aspects of the hydrologic cycle relating to hydrometeorology

·        Determine Mean Areal Precipitation over a basin

·        Identify stream types and stream systems

·        See how basin characteristics and storm movement affect hydrograph shapes

·        Explain rating curves and how they relate to discharges and stages

Menu of Lessons

The seven sections in the Basic Hydrologic Concepts module guide the forecaster through a series of basic hydrometeorological processes.  Use the links below to access each component to progress through this module.

       I.     Hydrologic Terms and Units

II.     Hydrologic Basin Exercise and Topography Map

III.     Hydrologic Cycle and Determination of Mean Areal Precipitation

    IV.     Rainfall and Runoff Relationships

     V.     Unit Hydro Graphs

VI.     Rating Curves and Streamflow Measurements
