PCU 1: Develop and Maintain Partnerships and Strengthen Awareness of Weather Needs

Develop and maintain relationships with fire and emergency management partners by building an understanding of fire and incident response. Support these relationships by leveraging NWS products and services, and understanding weather’s role in fire behavior.

Job Task Skills and Knowledge:

Identify fire weather partners and their needs based on job function and agency Understand the impacts of fire weather forecast elements on fire operations Apply Annual Operating Plan and Directive 10-401 to local WFO operations Demonstrate good customer service skills Familiarize partners with NWS fire weather products and services Comprehend and utilize terminology associated with the fire community Maintain Knowledge of Red Flag Warning Criteria

Instructional Components:

IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100 (FEMA), if not taken already as part of the IDSS PDS (2 hours) IS-700 An Introduction to the National Incident Management System (FEMA), if not taken already as part of the IDSS PDS (3.5 hours) S-110 Basic Wildland Fire Orientation video (0.25 hours) S-110 Basic Wildland Fire Orientation full course (preferred, 2 hours) S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (6-8 hours) Local training on understanding the appropriate fire weather Annual Operating Plans (2 hours) Familiarization visit to a Land Management agency or local Fire Weather partner to observe their operations (2-8 hours). This could include observing a prescribed burn.
