PCU 6: Supporting Complex Incident Management Teams as an IMET


Develop and maintain skills to operate remotely and independently in variable operational settings supporting various organizations including Complex Incident Management Teams (CIMTs).

Job Task Skills and Knowledge:

  • Assume the role of an IMET and initiate position activities at the appropriate time
  • Utilize internal and external agency policies to arrange travel to and from an incident including transportation of IMET equipment, and comply with procedures to ensure reimbursable process is expeditious after the assignment
  • Maintain a level of preparedness and training to rapidly assume IMET duties upon arrival at an incident
  • Provide weather input which influences, guides and directs decision makers to accomplish objectives and desired outcomes in a rapidly changing, high risk environment
  • Achieve a superior level comprehension of IMT organization and procedures to facilitate operating in a setting with high variability
  • Utilize knowledge of weather in complex terrain regimes and high resolution tools to provide input to tactical operations
  • Use suitable communication techniques to share relevant information with appropriate decision makers on a timely basis to accomplish objectives in a rapidly changing, high risk environment
  • Coordinate development of observing networks including portable weather stations, upper air systems, and manual observations to confirm local weather patterns
  • Have general knowledge of weather patterns across the entire service area of the NWS
  • Understand Interagency financial agreements and accurately complete deployment and training reimbursable forms
    • This can include support of Deployment ready meteorologists to non-ICP assignments


Instructional Components:

  • S390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations (in residence course, 44 hours)
  • ICS 300 Intermediate Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents, if not taken already as part of the IDSS PDS. Available through each state’s Department of Emergency Services (in residence training, 21 hours)
  • Completion of tasks as directed by the IMET Taskbook (most to be completed on training assignments)
  • Completion of at least 2 IMET training assignments as an IMET trainee (Trainees only - 400+ hours)
  • Meet the requirements to be Deployment Ready, as described in the IDSS PDS
  • Participation in annual IMET Continuity of Excellence Exercise (CEE) (virtual workshop, 20 hours)
  • Participation in annual IMET Continuity of Excellence Exercise (CEE) (Every ~3 years - in residence workshop, 40 hours)
  • Participation in annual RT-130 Refresher (3-5 hours)
  • Completion of annual IMET training activities as directed by IMET Training Working Group (5 hours)
  • Comprehension of S490 Advanced Fire Behavior Calculations by reviewing the Instructor Reference Materials and slides (in residence course completion is preferred, but optional, 10-47 hours)
