PCU 4: Provide Fire Weather Products and Services

Understand the needs of our fire weather partners to ensure we produce timely, high quality, relevant, and clearly defined products and services using pertinent meteorological data and fire weather forecast tools and techniques. This includes both routine services and incident-based support.

Job Task Skills and Knowledge:

  • Utilize knowledge of terrain influences and local weather effects to provide sub-grid level detail in spot forecasts
  • Interact with partners to obtain supplemental data that aids in writing effective site specific forecasts and supports projects and incidents
  • Assess exposure of incidents to weather events based on logistical and operational considerations
  • Coordinate with incident managers to develop trigger points for notification on short term and long term high impact events
  • Identify critical operational areas that may require highly detailed weather information
  • Evaluate complex terrain to determine locations which may demonstrate substantial departures from expected prevailing weather and deviate from grid scale forecasts
  • Utilize conceptual and fine-scaled computer models to improve understanding of local weather conditions
  • Utilize multiple methods to increase understanding of local-specific site needs. This may include site visits and access to site maps and other site intelligence
