Our Mission

The Office of the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) provides professional and technical training to enable NWS employees to reach optimum performance in present assignments and future responsibilities. The Office goals are to teach job-specific, communication, leadership and practical skills for all employees; teach latest scientific and technical concepts to support research to operations; emulate the NWS working field environment in an educational setting; and provide students the ability to work and experiment with concepts or equipment off-line as part of learning.

News & Announcements

  • COMET has published Rip Currents Forecasting, 2021 Edition. This lesson provides a detailed overview the rip current forecast process and includes several recent developments in rip currents forecasting, including the Nearshore Wave Prediction System (NWPS) and its Probabilistic Rip Current Forecast. To access this lesson in the Commerce Learning Center, click here. (10/14/21)

  • New from COMET is Improving Lightning Awareness Using GOES-R GLM Products and Ground-based Observations. This lesson explores the capabilities and use of three Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) products in tandem with ground-based lightning observations in convective environments. Several small case examples provide the learner with opportunities to distinguish between the capabilities of these products. To access this lesson in the Commerce Learning Center, click here. • COMET has published Foundations in Probabilistic Forecasting - Applications. This lesson focuses on five different weather events at varying timescales and allows learners to practice the knowledge gained in the "Foundations in Probabilistic Forecasting - Data Distribution and Statistical Measures" training. Learners are tasked with using different probabilistic measures to convey probabilistic information in a forecast. To access this lesson in the Commerce Learning Center, click here. (10/01/21)

  • COMET has published Communicating Hazards and Impacts During Extratropical Transition. The main goal of this lesson is to gain practical experience with focusing messages on impacts, collaborating with other offices and maintaining consistent messages as a tropical cyclone becomes post-tropical. To access this lesson in the Commerce Learning Center, click here. (09/27/21)

  • COMET has published Satellite RGB Composite Imagery and Applications. This lesson explores the use of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) composite satellite imagery products for environmental applications including detection and characterization of surface features, cloud types, convection, and dust. Learners are provided opportunities to explore the usefulness of RGB products in actual forecast situations, demonstrating the value of the multispectral composite products compared to single-band imagery.
