Introduction:

This page will allow you to view photos and diagrams of various operational area designs, which were provided by a number of Warning Forecast Offices (WFOs). You can view the full-size of each image by clicking on the respective thumbnail.

Examples:

WFO Diagrams
Baltimore/DC Office Layout Baltimore/DC: Double "dog-bone" configuration with low walls to allow easier communications. Warning teams separated from general operations with increased computational power. Click here to view the blueprint of this office. Click here to see a three-dimensional view of the layout.
Memphis Office Layout Memphis: Although the severe weather operations area seems circular, the two warning teams are the focal point of the setup. Surrounding them are multiple communications personnel, including the HAM desk, and the meso-scale analyst. The warning coordinator is situated in the middle of the entire operations area with the ability to montior all positions within the office.
Norman Office Layout Norman: The unique "horseshoe" configuration allows everyone to face each other and the large SA display at the front of the room. Warning forecasters are generally situated near the extra communications desk towards the rear of the room. This facilitates easy information exchange while not having to turn away from the AWIPS station or the SA display.
Peachtree City Office Layout Peachtree City: This WFO shares its space with the Southeast River Forecast Center, so space is at a premium. Their severe weather operations places their "warning triange," comprised of the two warning forecasters and the warning assistant, in front of an extensive SA display. On the other side of that section is the communications areas, allowing for quick feedback to the warning forecasters.
Tulsa Office Layout Tulsa: Here is another WFO that shares its space with a River Forecast Center (for this example, the Arkansas-Red Basin RFC). The severe weather operations area is located in the center of the room, with an extensive SA display facing the warning forecasters and the mesoanalyst sitting behind them.
Wichita Office Layout Wichita: The severe weather operations occur in the center of the forecast area, with both the warning forecasters facing SA displays. The near circular pattern allows the warning coordinator to place himself/herself in the center of the operations environment.
