You can launch HSC and the Storm Track Tool all at once by clicking on this new launch icon in the top CAVE ribbon. You can also launch the Storm Track Tool using this new icon in the Hazard Services Console if you’re using the Short Fuse, Convective, Hydrology, or All Hazards filter settings.

You are given the option to track using a point, line, or motionless hazard, and you can select which hazard type to issue. Just like in WarnGen, after you track your hazard, the STT uses your forecast track to build an initial polygon which you can then edit as desired.

Additionally, color coding has been added to differentiate hazard types and to give a visual cue of how much time remains until expiration.
" /> </Block> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="There are also many changes to the icons along the Console ribbon. You’ll note the Storm Track Tool icon I mentioned on the last slide. New filter icons have been added: a time bomb or stopwatch for the Short Fuse filter, and a thunderstorm for the Convective filter. Additionally, selecting any of the filter icons will now automatically change your Console filter settings, although the option to change filters in the Setup menu still exists as well. An icon in the shape of a person is added, called the “Only show my events” button. Some folks like to call it the Narcissist Button, because it’s for when all you want to do is just look at yourself. When you select it, only those hazards with your user ID attached will appear in the Console. Your polygon Drawing Tools and Drawing Actions have been split into separate dropdowns with a variety of new options for each. The session configuration button has a new logo for extra visibility. Finally, Service Backup now has its own icon, making it quicker and easier to select another WFO and enter backup mode." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="The HID also contains new functionality to support HSC. Your tracked storm speed and direction display in the HID and automatically update as you update the track with the Storm Track Tool. When you select an automated station or human source for a warning, a Report Details megawidget will appear in the HID for you to enter your report. Smart Calls To Action have been incorporated for Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings, where only Calls To Action that match your selected IBW threats will appear in the list. Finally, the “Issue All” button on the Product Editor window has been changed to display the number of products you are issuing to make sure you’re sending out the number of products you intend to. Just keep in mind that issuing multiple short-fuse products of the same hazard type within the same minute will still result in not all products displaying on the NWS webpage hazards map." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="For additional visibility, when you issue a tornado emergency in HSC, the hazard will appear with a fuchsia color in the Console and on your AWIPS map display rather than the standard red for tornado warnings. Your focal point must first configure the airports in your CWA and their geometries before activating this tool. Once activated, you can open the Airport Weather Warning Tool from the Tools dropdown menu in the Console ribbon when using either the Short Fuse or Convective filter setting. When you run the tool, it will prompt you to select an airport in your CWA and click Run, then you enter the warning information in the HID and issue just like other Hazard Services products. For situational awareness purposes, the Airport Weather Warning will show up in the Console and on your map display for the Short Fuse and Convective filter settings, but you can’t follow it up because it’s not a VTEC product." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="I mentioned earlier that WarnGen can still be used even after you go live with Hazard Services Convective, but we strongly suggest you do not mix the two warning platforms during an event because there are some compatibility issues between WarnGen and Hazard Services. In particular, WarnGen can follow up Hazard Services hazards, but Hazard Services cannot follow up WarnGen hazards. Any hazard that was issued or followed up in WarnGen can only be further updated using WarnGen, at least until that hazard expires and it’s time to issue a new one.
" /> </Block> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="While you can’t update WarnGen hazards in Hazard Services, you can still see their polygon on the map display and some hazard information in the Console. You can tell that a hazard in the Console is from WarnGen because it will have a user name of “Interoperability.” Selecting that hazard in the Console opens a blank HID with a message stating the hazard can’t be edited in Hazard Services. Unfortunately you can’t see the full WarnGen hazard text in Hazard Services, only in WarnGen.
" /> </Block> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="There’s one more compatibility issue to note during the 23.4.3 rollout period. A site that has yet to install Hazard Services Version 4 through either the ATAN or 23.4.3 install will be able to see Version 4 sites’ hazards in Hazard Services without issue. However, once a site upgrades to Version 4, the only way they can view Hazard Services hazards for a site that has yet to upgrade is to go into service backup for that site. Once all sites have 23.4.3 installed, they should see all sites’ hazards without issue as before." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="If you feel like your head is spinning from all the changes I just covered and you want a more in-depth treatment of HSC with lots of hands-on practice, you’re in luck! The Operations Training Unit, or The Training Office Formerly Known As WDTD/FDTD/DSCSD, has developed some extensive Hazard Services Convective training that will walk you through everything you need to know and provide you hands-on experience with the software. Be careful though, zombies may pop up at any moment! I probably should have put a spoiler warning on that. Anyway, you can access the HSC training in the CLC, just search for “Hazard Services Convective.” Once you’ve completed that training, we’ve provided jobsheets you can work through on an operational workstation in practice mode for further experience with HSC. We highly recommend that all warning meteorologists in your office complete the Hazard Services Convective training before your office goes live operationally with HSC due to those WarnGen and Hazard Services incompatibility issues I just mentioned on the previous slide." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="Let’s take a look at a few Hazard Services changes in Build 23.4.3 that aren’t covered in the Hazard Services Convective training. First, you can now issue some fire weather products in Hazard Services, specifically Fire Weather Watches and Red Flag Warnings. Like the Convective portion of Hazard Services, the Fire Weather functionality is not turned on by default. Your office will need to decide whether to configure your fire products in a HazSimp format or using the out-of-the-box legacy format. After testing out your configuration, your focal point can switch the Fire Weather functionality on for live operations. Once live, you will see a new flame icon in your Console ribbon for the Fire Weather filter where you can view and issue your Fire Weather Watches and Red Flag Warnings." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="The process for combining multiple long fused hazards into one has changed in Build 23.4.3 as the Combine Hazards Tool has been removed from the Tools menu. Now if you wish to combine two or more hazards, you just highlight those hazards in the Console, right click, and select “Combine 2 Selected,” or whatever number of hazards you have selected. Note that the right click Combine option only appears in the menu when you select multiple hazards with the same hazard type and the same start and end times. When you select ”Combine Selected,” you’ll see a popup asking you to confirm, and when you click “Combine” a combined hazard will appear in Proposed status in the Console. You can then edit the hazard in the HID and issue that combined hazard." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="Sometimes when you draft a Pending or Proposed long-fuse hazard that overlaps in area and time with another Pending, Proposed, or Issued long-fuse hazard, the hazard types may result in a conflict. For example, you’re not allowed to have both a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for the same area at the same time. When Hazard Services recognizes such a conflict, opening either hazard in the HID will show a salmon color HID background and a white X in a red circle next to the tab header. If you try to click Preview or Propose in the HID, a pop-up will direct you to resolve the conflict and you won’t be allowed to proceed any further. 
" /> </Block> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="If you draft a hazard that triggers a conflict, the Remove Conflict Overlap Tool can be used to remove the overlapping area from either conflicting hazard. To use this tool, first highlight in the Console whichever hazard you want to crop, then open the Tools menu and select the Remove Conflict Overlap Tool. A pop up window will appear. Just click the “Run” button on that window to crop away the conflicting area from the hazard. The HID will return to normal, and you can then proceed to propose or issue the hazard." /> </Block> </Content> </Document> <Document xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Content> <Block> <Style /> <Span Text="To allow for stronger messaging of some extreme winter weather events, in build 23.4.3 a new checkbox option in the HID allows you to attach a Particularly Dangerous Situation (or PDS) tag for blizzard warnings and ice storm warnings. The PDS tag on blizzard and ice storm warnings should be reserved for extreme, historic-level events only.
