Service Assessments

Service Assessments are reports used to evaluate the performance of offices following a significant event.

The NWS Directives define a “significant” event as a “major economic impact on a large population, multiple fatalities or serious injuries, national or extensive media coverage, or an unusual level of attention on NWS performance”.

  1. A significant event occurs.

  2. The Office of the Administrator determines whether a Service Assessment is needed.

    • If needed, a team of experts (from the NWS and outside the NWS) gathers information about the event.

  3. The team writes a report, evaluating the performance of the office - identifying best practices and deficiencies.

  4. Report submitted for approval by the Office of the Assistant Administrator for Weather Services.

Your office can benefit from Service Assessments by implementing some of the recommendations from the report.
