Fieldwork Preparation

Prepare for fieldwork by making sure you have the documents and tools you need.

Safety first!
  • Review and print the latest E-19 and/or E-19A
  • Collect tools and necessary parts (if repairs are required)
  • Verify correct datum set for use on handheld GPS or mobile phone
  • Ensure mobile devices are charged
  • Bring a flashlight and extra batteries
  • Practice setting up the level at least the day before the visit and obtain a reading on a local known elevation
  • Note any flood or low-water impacts since the last visit so you can verify impact levels and add the information to HydroBase
  • Make note of any significant changes to watershed such as changes in land use or channel improvement projects
  • Pack a bag with safety equipment, including insect spray, safety vests, and cones, flares, or triangles
  • Pack food and water, particularly if the location is rural
  • Obtain permission from the landowner if the gage is on private property
  • Verify appointments with anyone you plan to see during the fieldwork
