Staff Responsibilities

The WFO staff is an important part of the hydrologic program. The entire staff is involved and responsible for a successful hydrologic program.

WFOs collect and quality control hydrometeorological data and information, issue flood and flash flood products, perform public outreach, and coordinate with partners and other stakeholders.

Read Section 1 Introduction and Section 2 Staff Responsibilities of NWSI 10-921 Weather Forecast Water Resources Hydrologic Operations and for an overview of the specific responsibilities for operational staff.

Assist the HPMAll operational staff members at a WFO assist with the hydrology program. Learn about the responsibilities of each team member by reading NWSI 10-921.

Focus on Section 3: WFO Hydrologic Functions, which describes the five primary hydrologic functions:

  • Hydrologic forecast and warning operations
  • Hydrology program leadership activities
  • River forecast center (RFC) support
  • Hydrologic/hydrometeorological data program management (includes observation network oversight, data collection, and QC)
  • Interagency support (includes forecast and data exchanges
