If the conceptual model is realistic for the basin, such that parameters have physical meaning, good first approximations for some of the parameters may be inferred from streamflow records, precipitation records, and other basin and soil characteristics.
The chances of obtaining the most representative set of parameters are increased with successive approximations if the first approximations are reasonable.
