Our Mission

The Office of the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) provides professional and technical training to enable NWS employees to reach optimum performance in present assignments and future responsibilities. The Office goals are to teach job-specific, communication, leadership and practical skills for all employees; teach latest scientific and technical concepts to support research to operations; emulate the NWS working field environment in an educational setting; and provide students the ability to work and experiment with concepts or equipment off-line as part of learning.

  • COMET has published GOES-16/JPSS Case Exercise: Monitoring the Rhea Oklahoma Grassland Fire. This lesson provides the opportunity for forecasters to become more familiar with the enhanced capability and utility of newer satellite products through interpretation activities and interactions based in the context of the April 2018 Rhea grassland fire in Oklahoma, from the detection of the fire to its spread and evolution over the first couple of days.   • COMET has published What's New in NBM v3.2. This short video describes the NWS National Blend of Models v3.2 upgrade, which is scheduled for November 2019. To access this video in the Commerce Learning Center, click here. (05/21/19)

  • 2019 Tropical Training is available in the Commerce Learning Center. The 2019 Tropical Operations curriculum is targeted for coastal WFOs while the 2019 Inland Tropical Operations curriculum is targeted for inland WFOs. See the Tropical Training Page for more info. (04/02/19)

  • The Satellite Foundational Course for JPSS (SatFC-J) is now available in the Commerce Learning Center. This 6-8 hour course contains an orientation and 13 lessons to bring forecasters, the scientific community, and others up-to-date on the capabilities of the JPSS/NOAA-20 satellite. The JPSS satellite series introduces a variety of new and improved capabilities compared to previous NOAA satellites, and this course was designed to promote full integration of this new observation capability into NWS operations. For non-NOAA employees, the SHyMet SatFC-J course is available. (03/15/19)
