AWIPS OB8.2 Training

In support of AWIPS Operational Build 8.2 (OB8.2), WDTD has released training on the Four-Dimensional Stormcell Investigator (FSI) and the Estimated Actual Velocity (EAV) tool. This training is taken on the Weather Event Simulator to facilitate interactive training, and the test is taken in the LMS. The following describes the training and support information needed to take the training:

1. Four-Dimensional Stormcell Investigator (FSI)

LMS Search Keyword: OB8.2

  1. Lesson1: FSI Basics (60-90 minutes)
  2. Lesson2: Storm Interpretation (60 minutes)
  3. Lesson3: Interrogating Linear Multicells (20 minutes)
  4. Lesson4 Interrogating Supercells: (20 minutes)
  5. Lesson 5: Interrogating Individual Pulse Storms (20 minutes)
  6. Lesson 6: Interrogating a Tropical Cyclone (20 minutes)

Lessons 1 and 2 require completion of a test in the LMS. Lessons 3-6 are short optional lessons designed for learning tips on applying FSI in different environments.

Target Audience: All NWS staff with warning-related responsibilities, ITOs, and AWIPS focal points.

Description: At the end of these lessons you will be able to:

  • manipulate dynamic horizontal and vertical radar cross-sections to improve your base data analysis
  • optimally configure your workstation for running FSI in warning operations
  • Identify strengths and weakensses of using FSI for radar analysis

2. Estimated Actual Velocity Tool (EAV)

  1. The Estimated Actual Velocity (EAV) Tool (20 minutes)

Target Audience: All NWS staff with warning-related responsibilities, ITOs, and AWIPS focal points.

Description: At the end of this training you will be able to:

  • manipulate the EAV to estimate 2D winds from radar base velocity data and a user-defined wind direction
  • identify how the EAV estimates 2D winds
  • identify EAV strengths and weakensses

      • AWIPS cases with OB8.2 localizations (including storm-based warning cases from OB8.1 training)
      • training presentations that play through the WES Scripting Language (WESSL)
      • an extra WES8.2 install DVD to be used if the original WES8.2 install DVD was unreadable
      • initial patches for WES8.2 (patches are automatically installed during case installation)
  • WES8.2 Patch #1 (posted to web early Jan. 2008)
  • WES8.2 Patch #2(posted to web early Feb. 2008)
  • WES8.2 Patch #3(posted to web late Feb. 2008)
  • OB8.2 FSI/EAV Training Patch (posted to web early Jan. 2008)
    • fixes lesson1 slide 15 video not playing
    • download fsi-lesson1-patch-tar.gz and copy to the WES box as user fxa if lesson1 slide 15 pops up blank, then:
      • tar xvfz fsi-lesson1-patch-tar.gz
      • cd fsi-lesson1-patch
      • ./fsi-lesson1-patch.csh

WES Training Focal Point Instructions:

    1. take WES8.2 Overview training in LMS (~15 min)
    2. install WES8.2
    3. install WES8.2 patch
    4. install OB8.2 FSI/EAV training
    5. install OB8.2 FSI/EAV training patch if FSI lesson1 slide 15 pops up blank
