Documenting gage locations and gage operating limits improves hydrologic operations.
Gage Location Information
HydroBase information, aside from the minimum required for HydroView to plot and RiverPro to create products is helpful for hydrologic operations.
Documenting the additional gage information also helps the continuity of the hydrologic program.
Use the information you obtained while updating the HSM to include in HydroBase entries.Historical information is also helpful. Look for information in:
- old E-19s and station description reports
- field notes
- gage owner publications (USGS Water Resources Data)
- notes from conversations with people living near the river
- newspaper articles and television stories
Gage Operating Limits
Work with gage owners to determine the operating limits of gages. Include this information in the documentation for the gages.
Example: A gage exceeded its operating limits during a flood event. The data sent from the gage indicated the stage leveled off, but the gage was really malfunctioning.
Forecasts were adjusted based on the incorrect data and the flow to the downstream gage continued increasing despite the “flat line” hydrograph upstream.
