Automated Flood Warning Systems provides tabular river stage and precipitation data for participating states.
NWS Cooperative Observers (COOP) who read wire weight gages, staff gages, or other (utility or business-owned) river gages and report information to the NWS daily and/or in high-water situations provide an invaluable service to the NWS and the country.
USGS Real-Time Water Data for the Nation is a source of data if it is unavailable in AWIPS. Real-time data typically are recorded at 15 to 60 minute intervals, stored onsite, and transmitted to USGS offices every one to four hours, depending on the data relay technique used. Transmission times may be more frequent during critical events.
RiverGages.com is a USACE data-mining site for archived river data.
CUAHSI-HIS, the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc., has an online database of all of the information it collects.
Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) weather stations at airports and other locations, are co-funded by the NWS and the FAA. ASOS sends reports hourly, or more often if needed. The hourly precipitation data from ASOS gages are also critical for the MPE application on AWIPS.
Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) - Nearly 2,200 interagency stations operate throughout the United States.
Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) measures weather parameters, analyzes the data, and broadcasts the information to pilots.
Automated Weather Sensors System (AWSS) is an “advanced AWOS”. The systems are funding by the FAA and use NWS ASOS algorithms.
NWS Cooperative Observing Program (COOP) observers are an asset, especially in rural areas. Presidential disaster declarations require the use of NWS-approved observed data, which includes COOP reports.
The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network is a large, rapidly growing network of volunteer observers. Many people are recruiting new COOP observers based on their active CoCoRaHS reports.
The MesoWest page has a status monitor for the sites in their network.
