Use the office web page and social media to reach many people in your Hydrologic Service Area.
NWS Pages
Use the Weather Story to inform the public about upcoming hydrologic events. The IDSS Toolkit has an excellent set of templates and images for the Weather Story.
National preparedness weeks (with the exception of Hurricane Preparedness Week) are transitioning to seasonal safety campaigns. Click here for additional information on materials your office can use.
Social Media
The Department of Commerce maintains a list of approved social media sites. Consult this list to see the approved sites.
Review the NWS Social Media (guidance) page for documentation and tools. A national social media policy is under development. You should also check in with local and regional focal points for additional support.
Social media provides an opportunity to reach a wider audience. In addition to static graphics, various social media platforms support video and chat, allowing for more interaction with the public and stakeholders.
You also have the opportunity to post information on a more frequent basis than the Weather Story. Consider adding this statistic in order to reduce flood fatalities:
For the 10-year period from 2004-2013, 50% of flood fatalities (377 of 753) occurred in vehicles. (Source: National Hazards Statistics tables).
