Federal Partners

Many Federal agencies comprise the hydrologic community. Click each logo to visit the agency's web page to learn more.

USGS

The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) is an important partner because much of the stage data comes from USGS DCPs.

Work with the local USGS office to learn how they survey, take flow measurements, verify datum and wire-weight check bar readings, and use GPS in the field.
USACE

The U. S. Corps of Engineers (USACE) is responsible for operating/maintaining reservoirs for flood control, hydropower, and navigation.

It is important to maintain connections to the USACE, particularly on water supply and drought topics.

NRCS

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is an agency under the USDA. The largest provider of snowpack information from SNOTEL and snow course sites.

USBR

The U. S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) controls many reservoirs, power plants, and water projects in the western United States and maintains cooperative agricultural networks in the Pacific Northwest and the Great Plains.

FWR

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) compiles the National Wetlands Inventory.

The web page also has an interactive mapping application and GIS layers available for download.

USIBWC

The U. S. International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) is responsible for agreements between United States and Mexico about water.

The USIBWC page includes Rio Grande flow data.

Department of Energy

The Department of Energy (DOE) operates four power administrations to transmit electricity from multiuse water projects run by the USACE, USBR, and IBWC.

These projects include four power administrations - Bonneville, Southeastern, the Southwest, and the Western Area.

TVA

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is federal corporation and the nation’s largest public power company.

FEMA

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the agency in charge when the President signs a disaster declaration.

FEMA has 10 regions, each with a Regional Response Coordination Center (RRCC). Contact each of the RRCC’s in your HSA prior to an event and obtain invitations to participate in readiness drills.
